Maintenance of laminar airflow with AC motors by MMR Group TransComfort

One of the most highly regulated and demanding industrial sectors is the pharmaceutical industry. Equipment such as mixers must operate in environments with stringent hygienic requirements (so-called cleanrooms), and the production processes themselves are subject to rigorous validation procedures. The response to these requirements is water-cooled AC motors from MMR Group TransComfort.

For the client Urliński, one of the European leaders in manufacturing process equipment, MMR Group TransComfort supplied AC motors with water cooling from the German manufacturer EMOD Elektromotoren (motors for a laboratory homogenization mixer and a homogenization mixer for the pharmaceutical industry). Both met the requirements for stable and undisturbed airflow conditions as well as high hygienic design standards, which are crucial for controlled-cleanliness production environments – within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and modern cosmetics manufacturing industries, as well as in the production of electronic components and semiconductors. These requirements arise from industry regulations and cleanroom standards, particularly EU GMP Annex 1 and the ISO 14644 series.

The integrity of laminar air streams filtered through HEPA filters constitutes the fundamental mechanism for reducing the risk of particle contamination. Standard electric motors equipped with cooling fans generate local air movements that may disturb the established laminar flow field and lead to the formation of micro-turbulence in critical zones.

From the perspective of the Contamination Control Strategy (CCS), such phenomena represent a potential source of uncontrolled particle transport within the process area. This is undesirable both in pharmaceutical manufacturing and in the production of highly contamination-sensitive microelectronic components.

The use of EMOD water-cooled motors supplied by MMR Group TransComfort eliminates this problem at the design level, as they do not generate additional air streams within the controlled production environment. As a result, this solution supports the maintenance of laminar flow integrity and the stability of environmental conditions required in cleanrooms.

The water-cooled AC motors operate without a fan, feature a smooth housing (without cooling fins), and a dual-material shaft (a structural section and a section in contact with the medium made of 316 Ti austenitic steel). Among other benefits, they provide companies such as Urliński with stable cooling independent of rotational speed, while also supporting validation processes and quality audits required in the highly regulated pharmaceutical industry.
